Moldova has faced domestic tensions, including the Transdniestrian crisis, that have undermined the country's unity; thus ethnonational relations and ethnopolitics remain a high priority both for the government and society. This article considers the history and present situation of Ukrainians in Moldova with an overview of the changes of their status and perspectives for their future. The authors also analyze the policy of Ukraine towards its co-ethnics in Moldova, outlining pros and cons of Kyiv's official stance in regard the local Ukrainian community. Conclusions are made and related suggestions proposed concerning the ways of resolving the remaining problems of Ukrainians in Moldova.

Cosmin Sirbu
The objective of the study is to clarify to what extent the alienation of a territory and the dynamics of the urbanization process may affect the evolution of the ethnic structure of the population within the timespan of a century. The year 1918 was an essential moment in the territorial evolution of the Romanian state which, in a short time, passed from the imminence of the total occupation by the Central Powers to the resolutions of the 1919-1920 peace treaties that sanctioned the unification of all the regions inhabited predominantly by Romanians. The evolution of the ethnic structure of the population in these territories recorded different tendencies, depending on the political and historical context. Ethnic and linguistic identification in Moldova: regarding geographic, political, and cultural aspects
2020 •
Cătălina Ceban
This Bachelor’s thesis is dedicated to the ethnic identification status of Moldovan citizens on the territory of contemporary Moldova. As a result of the many ideological influences and territorial changes of the past, a melange appeared, which geographically, politically, and culturally is known today as the Republic of Moldova. The concept of nationality in the international public law, and the following-up reality after the process of historical massive changes, clearly outlines the contradictory relation of the Moldovans regarding their ethnic origins and their present identification as a people. The mixed public opinion on the ethnic identification topic has led to an unstable confrontation as on the internal plan as in the international arena.

Small Nations but Great Differences: Political Orientations and Cultures of the Crimean Tatars and the Gagauz
2005 •
Ivan Katchanovski
This article examines differing political orientations of Crimean Tatars and the Gagauz, two main Turkic minorities in Ukraine and Moldova. Crimean Tatars in Ukraine expressed anti-Communist and anti-Russian political preferences, while the Gagauz in Moldova showed strong support for pro-Communist and pro-Russian parties and politicians. This study analyses the role of cultural factors in political attitudes and behavior of Crimean Tatars and the Gagauz and uses data from surveys, elections and referendums. The analysis shows that distinct historical experiences of Crimean Tatars and the Gagauz in the Ottoman Empire, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and Romania led to the emergence of distinct political cultures of these ethnic groups and affected their political behavior and attitudes in post-communist Ukraine and Moldova.
